YACHTING
Rain squalls of up to 20 knots and almost white-out conditions made life miserable for the young yachtsmen contesting the first race of the Canterbury P class championships from the Christchurch Yacht Club yesterday. There were several capsizes, some damaged sails, and six of the 14 boats failed to finish. The title-holder, Matthew Stechman, won the event, which is the first of five races this week for the Graham Mander Trophy. Result:— Stechman, Echo, 1; Robert' Sinclair, Expectation, 2; Jeremy Hanlon, Bad Medicine, 3; Michael van Enter, Snowy Too, 4.
