SUBURBAN CRICKET
Halswell and Merivale-Papa-nui share the senior suburban cricket competition lead at the Christmas break. Because of the wet weather only senior cricket was played at the weekend, the round being held on Saturday and Sunday. Halswell, which beat Upper Riccarton, and Merivale-Papa-nui, which accounted for New Brighton, hold an eight-point advantage over the third placed New Brighton. Halswell, after winning the toss, chose for Upper Riccarton to bat first at Halswell Domain. Terry Caldwell, with 43, supplied substance to Upper Riccarton’s 134. Wayne Burt, who took five wickets, featured with the bat as Halswell reached 136 for four before declaring. Upper Riccarton was dismissed for 136 in its second innings but it had a winning chance when Halswell was 101 for seven. However, an unbeaten partnership of 34 by John Neilson ana Lou Viecelli gave Halswell victory. Kevin Collins, with 66, anchored Merivale-Papanui’s first innings of 131 against New Brighton at Edgar Macintosh Park. Phil Monk and Phil Harris bowled 46 overs between them and took six and four wickets, respectively. New Brighton gained first innings points with one ball remaining of the allotted 50 overs, Ken Oxnam compiling a , half-century. Merivale declared at 166 for fotlr, but New Brighton collapsed dramatically and was dismissed for 75. Barry Cleverley was the hero for Merivale. His penetrative bowling resulted in nine wickets off 30 overs. Dave Ward scored a well
compiled 81 as Heathcote reached 175 against Hornby at Heathcote Domain. Kit Chambers and Warren Cresswell combined to dismiss Hornby for 131. Heathcote was bundled out for 91 on the second day, Merv Taylor and Mike Worley taking four wickets each. Hornby, needing 136 for victory, lost the battle on a damp track and was dismissed for 69, Cresswell claiming seven wickets for 19 off 10 overs. Sumner’s final two batsmen held on for four overs to force a draw with Harewood at Redwood Park. Gary Thompson’s hard-hit 84 set up Harewood’s declaration in the second innings, but 201 proved beyond Sumner. Dave Carroll (Harewood) took 10 wickets in the match. Scores:—
