Basketball player still in coma

NZPA-AFP Portland, Oregon A Portland Trail Blazers basketball forward, Ramon Ramos, remained in a coma yesterday and was given only a 50-50 chance of surviving injuries suffered in a car crash. Ramos, who played for his native Puerto Rico in last year’s Olympics, suffered severe brain damage when he was thrown from his car after losing control on an icy highway south of here early yesterday. Further examinations yesterday revealed that blood clots were putting pressure on the 22-year-old’s brain. “He is still deeply comatose and responding only to very strong stimuli,” said Dr Kim Burchiel. “In cases like this, things do tend to get worse over two or three days.” The police said Ramos was believed to be speeding when his car hit an icy patch and flipped oyer, landing in the median strip. Ramos was picked up by the Trail Blazers as a free agent after being overlooked in this year’s draft. While he had not yet played in a game, the news devastated the team.
