German officials to meet
NZPA-Reuter Stuttgart West Germany The East and West German tennis federations will meet for the first time nex month to discuss ways of improving the game in East Germany, officials from both sides have said. “We are going to meet on January 13 in East Berlin to find out whether it is possible to work together," said the West German federation’s president, Claus Stauder.
His East German counterpart, Hans-Joachim Peterrnann,, told a joint news conference during the Davis Cup final that East Germany would allow some young players to take part in minor tournaments abroad next year. But Mr Stauder said it would be years before East Germany, which has 1500 outdoor courts but none indoors, could catch up with the top tennis nations.
“It is a very difficult matter because I think the deficiency in East Germany is so big it might take 10 years to make it comparable, maybe even more,” he said. East German television has, for the first time, been showing live television coverage of the Davis Cup final with hundreds of thousands of viewers watching the defending champions. West Germany, beat Sweden, in Stuttgart.
