LINC on the lawn

The LINC lawn party for Christinas keeps growing. This year 700 to 800 LINC and Cardinal Network employees and their spouses, suppliers, and other guests spilled out of Christchurch’s biggest marquee to tables on the grass to sip champagne, Australian rose and nibble varied and ample food. The party has generally had classical music, but in the early days of the LINC Development Centre, the chamber music was drowned by the conversation. This year the music was from the Canterbury Chamber Consort, comprising Christine Wood (leader and flute), Eva Schwanen-Lilley (violin), > and George D’Ascenzo (cello). Electronic assistance gave the musicians the edge on the conversation, which was more sedate than that at the smaller lawn parties of LINC earlier in the decade.

Mr Peter Simpson, the executive director of the centre and one of the two founding partners, welcomed staff, guests and gatecrashers in a minimum of formality. Organisers say the LINC lawn party is secondary on the centre’s social calendar to the annual Christmas party for children of staff members. This was held earlier this month for 250 children, who demolished 500 Big Mac hamburgers and other treats before receiving gifts, carefully selected for each of them.
