London near lows

NZPA-Reuter London London shares were near the lows in quiet afternoon business on Friday (early Saturday N.Z. time) as Wall Street eased after a larger than expected SUSIO.2 billion October U.S. trade deficit. Earlier, the U.K. market showed a muted reaction to the latest U.K. inflation data, including a 7.7 per cent year-on-year gain in November retail prices, from a previous 7.3 per cent. This compared with some forecasts for a rise of 8 per cent. U.K. gilts closed around 1/ 2 point better on positive sentiment after the inflation data was released. The FTSE index closed 22.3 points down at 2344.7 on volume of 444.9 million shares. On Thursday share prices had extended earlier losses as Wall Street moved lower in the afternoon. Gilts ended with a rally to close 1/16 stronger on Wednesday’s close. The FTSE index closed 19.2 points weaker at 2367.0 on volume of 486.8 million shares. Wednesday’s shares were firm in late business as activity and sentiment remained dominated by the flood of interest created by the water

issue. Gilts closed below their best but up around % point over the previous day’s finish. The FTSE 100 index closed 12.1 points higher at 2363.5 Monday’s equities were near the day’s lows in later afternoon business Dealers said recent sharp gains and a feeling the mar-, ket may have been slightly overbought proved too tempting for some investors. A number of stocks trading exdividend also added to the FTSE 100 index decline. The index closed 12.1 points down at 2351.4.
