Chathams report

Sir,—At a parish council meeting on December 11 it was moved that a letter be written to your paper expressing concern in seeing the words in your paper on December 7: “The involvement in local politics of the Catholic priest on the Chatham Islands has deeply divided the Catholic community there” and “Catholic residents on the Chathams were unwilling to be identified, but reported that the whole affair had deeply divided the Catholic community.” The meeting felt strongly that both of these comments are untrue and that none of the people at the meeting had been approached by “The Press” or any person for their comments. Father Moesbergen is on holiday on the mainland, November 30 to December 15, and would naturally be “discussing his activities with his superiors.” Father Moesbergen did not initiate, organise, or lead the two petitions. As a person who advocates justice and fairness, he may have been active and vocal in these and other island matters. — Yours, etc., B. J. MILLS, Secretary, Parish Council, Church of St Therese, Chatham Islands. December 12, 1989.
