Monastery new youth hostel

The former monastery of the Marist Brothers’ teaching order in Alexander Street, Greymouth, will be the town’s new youth hostei. The proposal has attracted the support of the Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, the Most Rev. Basil Meeking, in whom the lease of the land is vested.

The propety was no longer required by the Marist Brothers, who have moved, and was sold

to the Youth Hostel Associated

The present hostel, below Cowper Street, will not be protected by the new flood protection wall. The building will be altered to provide accommodation for a hostel manager and hostel beds and service areas for 43 hostellers. A planning consultants’ report suggested the likely accommodation rate would on average be about 20 people a night.
