Christmas concert by Schola Cantorum
The Schola Cantorum will join the Christchurch Youth Choir and the Christchurch Youth Recorder Ensemble for a Christmas concert on December 17. The Schola Cantorum was founded in 1987 by Harry Abbenhuis to preserve and perform Medieval and Renaissance music. In this concert at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, they will perform Gregorian chants and works by Jos-
quin des Pres, Willaert, Hassler and Jacobus Clemens Non Papa. They will be conducted by Abbenhuis, who also conducts the Christchurch Youth Choir. The choir was founded in 1987 by the Christchurch School of Instrumental Music to cater for people aged 13 to 23. They perform music of many styles in the original language. In this concert, they will sing Berlioz’s “L’enfance du
Christ” and works by Buxtehude and Mozart.
The Christchurch Youth Recorder Ensemble, founded many years ago by Neville Forsyth and conducted by him, will play works by Bach, Giovanni Paola Cima and Vaughan Williams.
After the interval, the groups will join in performing a selection of Christmas carols and other works. The concerts starts at 3 p.m.
