Fiji exodus puts Indians in minority
NZPA-AFP Suva Indigenous Fijians now outnumber ethnic Indians in Fiji for the first time since 1946 following a post-coup exodus of Indians, the Bureau of Statistics said. In a report the bureau said the Indian population of the South Pacific State had dropped from a high of 51 per cent to 46.4 per cent. Native Fijians now comprised 48.4 per
cent with Chinese, part-Europeans and other races making up the remainder. The bureau said Fijians now numbered 351,966 and Indians 337,557 in a total population of 727,104. The report said 8500 Indians left Fiji this year, together with 1335 Fijians and about 100 Chinese. The flight of Indians and Chinese from the island republic began after the first of two
military coups in 1987. The departing Indians, mostly skilled or professional workers, have settled in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Britain, Canada and some small Pacific States. But the exodus of Chinese has been more than offset by the arrival last year of 2324 immigrants, mainly from China and Hong Kong.
