Advts influence teens — survey
PA TJ Wellinggton The favourite cigarette brands : of -teen-age. smokers are largely the ones that are advertised the most, according to a Health Department survey issued on Monday. The six brands advertised the most were smoked by 85 per cent of teen-age smokers surveyed, a department spokesman, Dr Murray Laugesen, said. The brands were also smoked by 67 per cent of smokers over the age of 25. Dr Laugesen said though the survey did not prove tobacco advertising led to more smoking, it
did show that teenagers were influenced by advertising. About $26 million of newspaper and • magazine space had been used to promote the six most advertised cigarette brands since 1980, he said. The most advertised brands were John Brandon, Benson and Hedges, Rothmans, Winfield, Sportsman and Pall Mall. The survey asked 2000 adults and 1800 children if they smoked, and if so, which brand. The survey showed that teen-age smokers were more loyal to their brands than adults were, Dr Lau.gesen said.
