Road safety plan

Wellington reporter A special Ministerial Committee has been set up by the Government to consider road safety and alcohol, and to plan an integrated road safety campaign. A team of officials has been convened that will report back to the Ministerial Committee by February 9. Its two terms of reference are:— • To identify how much of the Government dollar is presently targeted towards health and safety from road safety measures. • To pinpoint where and how Government agencies could contribute to a co-ordinated approach, for road safety campaigns. ' The Minister of Justice, Mr Jeffries, said there would be emphasis on alcohol and speed, along with restraints for people in vehicles, driver licensing and attitudes to road use. If present road statistics were maintained, by the year 2000 there would be another 8000 New Zealanders dead and 300,000 seriously injured. The financial cost of such a road toll would be more than $lO,OOO million and the country could ill-afford it.
