Church guide to racial harmony

PA Wellington The Catholic Church has published an education programme on racial harmony for “beginners.” The 45-page booklet is intended to improve understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and other issues. “Our Common Ground” is sponsored by the Catholic Commission for Justice, Peace and Development and is intended mainly for Catholics.

It is structured in five sessions for any individual or group feeling “confused, puzzled, or worried about the racial tensions that seem to divide this nation.”

The session discussions are guided by Church social teaching and encourage Catholics to be active and informed contributors to the present debate.

Themes encourage people to look at their cultural origins and to understand the diversity between European and Maori cultures.

They remind people that the Treaty is not a temporary agreement and that what happened in the past affects the future. The last theme points to a path of peace through accepting and promoting complementary development models.
