Crooked lawyers to cost $1.4M

PA Wellington Crooked lawyers are expected to cost their colleagues about $1.4 million in 1990, almost half as much again' as this year, though substantially less than in 1988 Levies for the Law Society fidelity fund, which compensates people whose money is stolen by lawyers, have been set at $5OO for 1990. The size of the levy was based on claims known to be in the pipeline, the society’s president, Mr Graham Cowley, said yesterday. This year the levy was $3OO. The 1988 levy was set at $lOO but extra levies of $7OO were needed to cover big payouts. He said the expected increase in payments in 1990 did not indicate a surge in cases of dishonesty. Rather, the amounts involved had risen.
