Philippines rebel troops surrender
NZPA-Reuter Mactan A group of army rebels who seized an air base in the central Philippines to back a coup attempt in Manila are returning to their units by ship, a military spokesman said yesterday. Rebel leaders surrendered on Saturday at the sprawling Mactan air base and international airport near Cebu after holding the air base and more than 30 planes for nine days. A total of 120 rebel troops left yesterday aboard the Lady of Lourdes to return to their units at Cagayan de Oro on the southern island of Mindanao, the spokesman said. They were the last rebel troops holding out against President Corazon Aquino. The armed forces chief-of-staff, General Renato de Villa, said the rebel leader at Mactan, air force Brigadier-General Jose Comendador, escaped in spite of a naval blockade of the island. A contingent of 300 government marines and armour, given a ceremonial brass band welcome, moved into Mactan yesterday, and thousands of people who evacuated their homes around the airport began returning home.
