Greenpeace beach clean-up bid ready
PA Auckland Greenpeace says its bid to rid coastlines of pollution is ready to be launched. The environmental group has formed more than 100 teams to run its adopt-a-beach campaign after a series of public meetings and postal appeals promoting the cause. ... Teams are responsible for sections of coastline from Stewart Island to Kaitaia. j The Greenpeace adopt-a-beach campaign assistant, Ms Hilary Trubuhovich, said information packs were how being sent to volunteers so they could begin the clean-up and record the amount and types of rubbish coliected. The three-fold aim was to observe, record and dispose of litter on beaches, shorelines and
recreation areas, Ms Trubuhovich said. In the last three weeks the Greenpeace Auckland office had received about 50 letters a day from supporters offering help after a postal appeal. Team leaders and coordinators had been appointed to head the campaign in each area. They would pass information to volunteers and collate collection records. Statistics from records of rubbish collected would eventually be presented to individual manufacturers, who would be asked to initiate ways of recycling the material or making it able to be broken down by sunlight. Greenpeace trial surveys of coastline rubbish during October showed 70 per cent of it was plastic.
