Coast picks NLP candidate

A fourth generation West Coaster, political activist and health campaigner, Mr Peter Neame, aged 38, has been selected as the New Labour Party’s candidate for the West Coast electorate. The selection was made yesterday at a meeting held in the Workingmen’s Club in Reefton. Also standing for selection were Ms Fran Turner and Mr Jim Kelly, both members of the Westport branch of the New
Labour Party. Mr Neame is a senior social worker with the Social Welfare Department in Greymouth. He stood as an independent candidate for the West Coast at the last General Election after professing disillusionment with Rogernomics. A registered general and psychiatric nurse, Mr Neame was active in campaigns to save hospitals at Reefton and Hokitika. A West Coast regional councillor and deputy chairman of the West Coast Electric Power
Board, Mr Neame served one term on the West Coast Area Health Board. He is a prospector and goldminer, and owns an antique business and is a published author. Mr Neame is married with two children and believes the New Labour Party “has a very good show” of winning the West Coast seat in the next election. But he is reluctant to predict election outcomes and says there is a lot of hard work to be done in the meantime.
