Hartland century frustrates Otago

The confidence which Canterbury’s cricket selectors have shown in Blair Hartland was fully justified yesterday when the young opening batsman scored his maiden first-class century against Otago at Lancaster Park. Hartland’s unbeaten 126 deprived Otago of any chance it had of starting its Shell Trophy campaign with an outright victory, and might one day be seen as the , innings which restored momentum to a career full of promise.’ Three years ago Hartland scored 172 in a junior international against Australia at Brisbane, but his 13 previous appearances in first-class cricket had brought him only 472 runs (at an average of 20) and a best of 73. But yesterday Hartland, with able assistance from Peter Kennedy (60) and Paul McEwan (64), came of age at provincial level as Canterbury mustered 297 for three wickets in its second innings. . It had trailed by 104 runs on the first innings, and was still 84 in arrears when the match resumed yesterday. Otago’s hopes were raised by the dismissal of David Boyle, but Hartland, Kennedy, McEwan and Rod Latham batted through until an early finish after the tea adjournment. Otago went home with four competition points, having succeeded in lifting its first innings over-rate of 15.8 up to the required 17. Canterbury travels to Napier for Friday’s encounter with Central Districts with a far stronger belief in its run-scoring capabilities. “We just had to keep batting right through. Someone had to stick around,” said Hartland after receiving the “man of the match” award. Hartland, aged 23, did just that, for 332 minutes in the face of 296 deliveries, and had only two moments of real anxiety. At 31 he survived a hard chance to Stephen Boock’s left hand in the gully, and when a nerve-wracking one run short of his century Hartland edged a ball from Peter Hills just short of Michael Austen at first slip. “I didn’t want to look around to see what happened to it,” said Hartland. A short while later Hartland clipped the ball behind square leg to attain his milestone. His innings had blossomed as it advanced — in round figures his first 50 occupied three hours, he reached 100 in another two hours, and the remainder of the runs flowed in about even time. The ratio of boundaries also steadily rose, and totalled 11 fours and a bonus overthrown five. The loss of Boyle, from a bat-

pad catch, did not faze Hartland. With Kennedy dominant in their second-wicket stand, 85 runs came in 84 minutes, and Hartland’s burgeoning authority was evident as he and McEwan added 107 runs in 95 minutes. A six over long-on off Boock, who has enjoyed many better days at Lancaster Park, got Kennedy under way, and as he breezed past his half-century in 72 minutes it seemed he would beat Hartland to a first century. But Kennedy fell leg before wicket to the medium pace of Ken Rutherford. McEwan idled along for a while, then pushed down firmly on the accelerator. His lofted ondrives were a delight; ah attempt to hit high over mid-off was his downfall. McEwan is within 21 runs of becoming the first Canterbury batsman to have a career aggregate of 5000. By tea Latham was also into his stride, but there was not enough time for a realistic declaration and the captains decided that tea should be, in the context of this match, the last supper. Auckland leads the Shell Trophy with a maximum 16 points from its match against Central. Both Otago and Northern Districts have four points each, and Canterbury, Central and Wellington have yet to open their accounts. CANTERBURY First innings 185 Second innings B. R.
