Saveur forces rethink
While the Wellington Cup meeting is still the main target for Saveur, the immediate programme of the Riccarton-trained chestnut could change as a result of his stylish success in the Ernst and Young Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday. Saveur, carrying 57kg, finished in his usual strong style from well back to win well from Ayabar and the unlucky Ambrosia Pal, which was held up for a
run in the straight. “The Douro Cup is the race I would like to tackle at Wellington, but the Terrace Regency Handicap (a Wellington Cup leadup won a few seasons ago by Saveur’s former stablemate, Beks) is also a,possibility. I want to keep him to big tracks and might bypass the four-year-old race at Kurow. He has come up extra well,” trainer, Michael Pitman said.
Saveur, which suffered a bleeding attack in his last race on an Australian campaign in April; won well, according to rider Raymond Bruce, although he did not have great reserves in hand in his first race for nearly eight months. “He was coming to the end of it, but you would expect that. He picked them up pretty quickly when I asked him to go,” Bruce said.
