WOMEN’S CRICKET Sydenham’s Andrea Devine and Maia Lewis went on a scoring spree against Lancaster Park on Saturday. In an exhibition of splendid batting both players made centuries and featured in a partnership of 236. On the first day of round five Sydenham after being sent in to bat at Porritt Park, lost the early wicket of Toni Watts but Maia Lewis joined Andrew Devine at the batting crease taking control of the game for Sydenham. Both players, driving and cutting strongly, dispatched any loose deliveries to the boundary, Lewis twice clearing it. Devine brought up her maiden century with a sweetly timed

off drive and the Lewis century was posted with a lofted shot a short time later. The two accumulated a massive 236 for Sydenham, the last hundred coming off 15 overs. At the compulsory declaration of 70 overs the Sydenham total was 261 for one. Devine finished with 133 not out; Lewis 117 not out. In reply the Lancaster Park openers, Sarah Helmore and Trudy Anderson, gave the side a solid start notching up 81. The team however lost three quick wickets slipping to 99 for 3 with Anderson the backbone of the innings on 56 not out. Not content with 117 runs Lewis also starred with the ball for Sydenham taking 2 for 16 off 16 overs. St Albans have the upper hand in the game against Riccarton needing only 16 runs with 8 wickets available for first innings points. Although Riccarton’s in-form opening pair, Lesley Murdoch and Debbie Ford, again got the innings away to a sound beginning of 76, wickets quickly fell with some indiscreet shots once these two were out. The wily off spin of Catherine Campbell made the initial breakthrough and she again collected a five wicket bag. The accurate medium pacer, Jo Eason, picked up three valuable wickets in the middle order. The Riccarton mediumpace duo, Karen Gunn and Delwyn Costello, bowled unchanged throughout the St Albans innings restricting the scoring to two runs an over. At stumps St Albans was comfortably placed at 109 for 2 after a fine second-wicket partnership between Brigit Legg and Kirsty Bond who both drove attractively. SYDENHAM v. LANCASTER PARK Sydenham
