Watson takes seven wickets

The New Zealand mediumpacer, Willie Watson, achieved career-best figures of seven wickets for 60 runs as Auckland overwhelmed Central Districts by an innings and 104 runs in the Shell Trophy cricket match at Eden Park on Saturday. The match finished a day early with Central crashing for 146 all out in its second innings against the pace of Watson, Martin Snedden and Danny Morrison. , Watson bowled unchanged apart from two overs and twice took wickets in successive balls. On the first occasion Watson disposed of the New Zealand test hero, Mark Greatbatch, cheaply, caught in the gully by John Wright, and then dismissed Scott Briasco leg-before-wicket with the next ball. At one stage Central was 92 for four, but Watson, concentrating on bowling wicket to wicket, captured four wickets for six runs in the space of 18 balls and Central crumbled to 101

for eight. Only Martin Crowe resisted the Auckland attack for any period, hitting up 39 runs with five fours and a six in simin at the wicket. Auckland had resumed its first innings at 206 for three and added 154 runs before being all out just before lunch. Scoreboard:— CENTRAL DISTRICTS First innings 111 Second innings 145 S.
