Speedy start to bumps

The Cass Street racers will be obstructed by speed bumps from Monday, after the Christchurch City Council moved quickly yesterday to allay the concerns of business and property owners. 1 Kerbing was laid in preparation for the speed bumps, which will be built on Monday. The council’s engineer, Mr John Ince, had indicated work was unlikely to begin before February but contractors were able to be found at short notice. The council’s operations committee on Tuesday heard of damage by the racers to properties in the street. It decided on two road humps to deter the racers. The committee chairman, Cr Ron Wright, said yesterday the problems could not be allowed to continue. If necessary the street would be closed. Businesses would be canvassed ‘ next week about the Colombo Street end of Cass Street becoming an exit only.
