Stamps depict anniversaries
PA Wellington Two anniversaries, the 150th of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and the fiftieth of New Zealand’s first commercial flight, are recorded in the latest stamp issue from New Zealand Post. A Leonard Cornwall Mitchell painting is used to depict the signing of the treaty. The entire picture is included on a
12cm by Bcm miniature sheet which will be sold with the stamps. .The two stamps, effectively two small pieces of the larger picture, show Nga Puhi Chief Hone Heke shaking hands with Lieutenant Governor William Hobson, and Chief Kawiti signing the Treaty. Air New Zealand’s 80c fiftieth anniversary stamp pictures the Aotearoa, an
S3O empire class flying boat used on the first scheduled trans-Tasman flight on April 30, 1940. The aeroplane flew for Tasman Empire Airways, ancestor of Air New Zealand. Also shown on the stamp is a Boeing 7472008 jet airliner, five of which are now used by the airline. Penrhyn post office, in
; the Northern Cook t Islands, has issued its i Christmas stamps. All five stamps are based on “The Nativity,” , a picture by the renaissance painter, Albrecht Durer. The 55c, 70c, 85c and $1.25 stamps display only selected fragments of the painting, while the 9cm by 10cm $6.40 stamp features the whole.
