Unionist ‘might resign’
By
CHRIS MAHONY in Timaru
A member of the Labour Party Council has warned she might resign her position in protest against the Government’s liberalising of Sunday trading laws.
Ms Jenny Bloxham, a Timaru-based Canterbury organiser for the Distribution and General Workers’ Union, said the Government’s decision could be seen as a conflict of interest for her.
Ms Bloxham said the planned repeal of Sunday shopping legislation was “vehemently opposed” by union members who had called het this week.
She is waiting for a reply from the party president, Ms Ruth Dyson, before making a final decision on resignation. Canterbury employers were warned that the union would be “pretty vigilant" in following up complaints about undue pressure being placed on members to work on Sundays. She expressed concern that retailers reluctant to open could be forced to do so by their competitors.
