Australian juniors dent S.I. hopes
A team from the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation in New South Wales beat the New Zealand Golf Federation’s South Island junior team in an international match at the Coringa course yesterday. The Australians won the match, 10-2. One of the outstanding feats of the day was provided by Aaron Byrnes, of Australia, who had a four under par second nine of 32 in his stroke play match against Paul Quickenden, of Nelson, yesterday afternoon. Byrnes had a round of 72 and Quickenden had a respectable 75. Morning round — four-bail best-ball (N.S.W. names first): Lisa Gray and Bradley Smith 93, lost to Naomi Wallance (Westport) and Paul Davis (Balclutha) 92; Teena Porter and Matthew Habgood 70, beat Karen McQuillan (Kaiapoi) and Gavin Watson (Queenstown) 88; Cynarra Baker and and David Bransdon 75, beat Sandra Johnson (Kaiapoi) and Marcus Mariu (Kaiapoi) 77; Donna Reilly and Byrnes 70, beat Toni Batey (Christchurch) and Quickenden (Nelson) 76. Afternoon round.—singles stroke play: Gray 120 lost to Wallace 103; Smith 96 beat Davis 110; Porter 82 beat McQuillan 110; Habgood 81 beat Watson 82; Baker 82 beat Johnson 83; Bransdon 75 beat Mariu 81; Reilly 75 beat Batey 83; Byrnes 72 beat Quickenden 75.
