Melrose Square plan potential Parnell?
An inner city apartment development that is claimed by the developers to be of “Parnelllike” potential has recently been announced. The eight Art Deco revival apartments that make up the Melrose Square development will be in two blocks, with two apartments upstairs and two below to each block.
Each apartment is to be fully finished, including drapes, floor coverings, light fittings, wall heaters, ovens and automatic washing machine. All units will face north. The downstairs apartment will have a courtyard garden, upstairs will have both south and north balconies. The downstairs apartments are
priced at $99,000, the upstairs at $95,000.
The area for the development site is currently being redeveloped for urban renewal by the Christchurch City Council.
It borders onto Madras Street, Bealey Avenue, Barbadoes Street and Salisbury Street. A park is being created at the end of Ely Street with access to
Melrose Street. The land has become available as property owned by the Ministry of Works is released onto the market. There has been intense demand from builders and developers for the available blocks of land.
The developer of Melrose Square intends to build his own
home in the same area. With proximity to the Avon Loop, community facilities, parks and the Avon, the area is expected to show a similar hefty capital gain to that recorded since 1987. The agent for the Melrose Square development is Jill Taylor of Harcourts Real Estate Ltd, telephone 796-596, 668-968 a.h.
