Cycle helmets

Sir,—An article on November 24 gave details of a survey of cycle helmet wearing in Christchurch. The name of the organisation conducting the survey was not, however, mentioned. It was, in fact, conducted by the Christchurch Cycle Safety Committee, which is made up of specialist staff from the Christchurch City Council, the Canterbury Regional Council and the Ministry of Transport. The Christchurch Cycle Safety Committee is conducting a wider survey into cycle use and accidents in Christchurch. This survey is partly funded by the Road Research Unit of Transit New Zealand. Five thousand questionnaires have been completed by school pupils and members of the cycling public, as well as data on cycle accidents collected by general practitioners and the hospital. Results from the survey are being collated. They contain much new information. A report will be available in March, 1990. Anyone wanting details of the survey should contact the Traffic Operations Unit of the Christchurch City Council.—Yours, etc., M. L. GADD, Traffic Operations Manager, Christchurch City Council. November 30, 1989.
