South Africa

Sir,—Those who voluntarily undertake the thankless task of apologists for South Africa’s white minority apartheid system (A. T. Seymour, November 27) are obliged to argue that black is white. For example, the universal moral condemnation of white minority rule by the overwhelming majority of United Nations members is a “conspiracy against the white South Africa Government.” The A.N.C. is a “terrorist group.” “... the sacrifices and dangers the security forces constantly face to uphold law and order” euphemistically describes the terror employed by the white minority to maintain its subjugation of the black majority. Any film clip of the South African police dealing with black protesters hardly needs be designed to “denigrate the South African police as thugs,” they are thugs, an elite of thugs. Diversionary references by A. T. Seymour to events in Eastern Europe in no way minimise the evil of South Africa, which is an absolute, without mitigating circumstances. — Yours, etc., M. CREEL, 2B, 1989.
