Club anticipating successful day

By

JEFF SCOTT

Despite some personal decisions from Canterbury horsemen to “bypass” the first Sunday harness racing fixture at Motukarara this week-end, the Banks Peninsula Trotting Club is still anticipating a successful meeting. “We’re very satisfied with the compromise. We didn’t get what we wanted ($5500 CO races), but neither did the Conference nor the horsemen. I think the horsemen had an 80 per cent victory,” said the secretary of the Banks Peninsula Trotting Club, Lindsay Stowell, yesterday.

“If they (the New Zealand Trotting Trainers and Drivers’ Association) cannot accept a majority decision by the horsemen, then that is hard luck for them,” he said.

“It has been left to the individual horsemen to make their own choice, but the Trotting Trainers’ and Drivers’, as a body, support the club,” he added. This was in contrast to an accusation by Murray Butt, the president of the New Zealand Trotting Trainers, and Drivers’ Association, that the horsemen had been let down by the club.

It was estimated 120140 horsemen attended Sunday’s meeting, where a‘vote was taken for a compromise with the New Zealand Harness Racing Conference and the club over certain contingencies regarding Sunday’s CO races at Motukarara, including a $7OO winner’s trophy being added to each maiden race.

“They (the horsemen)

did vote on it and did agree to the compromise," said Mr Stowell.

“Because the withdrawal time has been put back until 8 p.m. on Thursday, preference horses after racing at Canterbury Park will be able to get a start at our meeting, so the best horses will be eligible to start at Motukarara,” he added on a positive note. Mr Stowell said there was no way the Banks Peninsula club would be involved in inviting North ■lsland reinsmen to attend the meeting, despite earlier rumours.

“There is no way this would happen. We support our local horsemen,” he said.

“As far as the club is concerned, the matter is now closed and we’re hopeful for a successful meeting,” he said.
