The conquerer of Mount Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary, will marry his longtime companion, June Mulgrew, in New Zealand on December 21, according to a report in the “Chicago Tribune.” Sir Edmund’s wedding plans were revealed by Mr Larry Witherbee, a sporting goods buyer for a firm handling camping gear on which Sir Edmund’s name appears.
Mrs Mulgrew is the widow of Mr Peter Muigrew, the in-flight commentator on the Air New Zealand tourist flight which crashed into Mount Erebus in Antarctica 10 years ago last week. The wedding plans were disclosed by
a “Tribune!* reporter, Steve Johnson, who interviewed Sir Edmund in Sandwich, Illinois, and also quoted Witherbee.
The report did not say where fn New Zealand the wedding would take place. Sir Edmund’s first wife and one of their three children were killed in a plane crash at Katmandu, Nepal, while on their way to visit him at the Arural hospital construction project Sir Edmund and Mrs Mulgrew had been friends for years, said the report Sir Edmund was in Sandwich to give a talk in support of the Hillary Foundation, an organisation which raises funds to help the Sherpa people of the Himalayas.
