Beks withdraws from Games
Anthony Beks officially withdrew from the New Zealand Commonwealth Games team yesterday. A letter from Beks was received by the New Zealand Swimming Authority in Wellington which confirmed his withdrawal. Beks, who was named in the Games team in September after a series of outstanding performances over 50 and 100 m breaststroke, has not trained for two weeks. The loss of Beks from the team will
hinder New Zealand’s chances of winning a medal in the men’s medley relay. Beks is the only New Zealand breaststroke swimmer to have broken 65s this year and a time of 64s or less will be needed on the breaststroke leg to keep New Zealand in with a chance of a medal. Richard Lockhart (Auckland) and Grant Forbes (Canterbury), who is making a comeback for the Games, are now likely to dispute the place in the relay team.
