M.P. hits at foreign farm sales
PA Wellington The Opposition’s agriculture spokesman, Mr John Falloon, has accused the Government of allowing “open slather” on farm sales to foreigners. Mr Falloon reacted yesterday to the Overseas Investment Commission’s approval of the sale of 110,479 ha to 84 foreigners in the year to October 31. The commission revealed on Thursday, in response to a written question from Mr Falloon in Parliament, that about half the applications in the last year came from Australia. The rest were from Hong Kong, Japan and Britain. Mr Falloon said there were “huge loopholes” in the law, allowing some prospective buyers to by-pass the commission and the Lands Department. “This Government, apparently not content with selling off our State-owned enterprises, has now declared open slather on the sale of our greatest single asset — our land,” he said. He wanted to ask the Minister of Lands, Mr Tapsell, and a Labour member of Parliament, Mr Allan Wallbank, who had expressed concern about the situation, if they would “stand by and see our heritage hocked off to foreign interests.” _
