The Wizard
Sir,—ln any year the Wizard entertains'hundreds of thousands of tourists and locals with bis views on women, politics and religion. Unfortunately, many of the more undesirable elements of drunks, glue-sniffers,
drug addicts and born-again Christians, are also attracted to his speeches. It is the latter who are by far the greatest threat to his well-being. They have decided that the only freedom of speech allowed in the Square is of the type they approve and, to this end, disrupt proceedings by continually interjecting. Today, things took a more sinister turn. Consumed by love, a group of born-agains surrounded the Wizard — blocking the view of many, who had arrived earlier — and prayed for his destruction. They certainly were not wishing him well. The Wizard has the hardwon right to speak. I have the right to listen or walk away. No group of people from any organisation has the right to prevent that. What does the council intend to do to prevent any further occurrences of this nature? — Yours, etc.,
R. CLARKE. November 24, 1989.
