Dancers seek to cut back shoe bill

NZPA-Reuter London Britain’s two big ballet companies appealed to the public yesterday to donate shoes to keep dancers on their toes. The “Pointe Shoes Appeal” urges individuals and corporations to donate at least one pair of shoes a year to help cut the cost of keeping the 75 dancers shod. The Royal Ballet spends £50,000 ($140,000) a year on shoes and its sister company, Sadler’s Wells, £40,000 a year. In one year, a member of the ballet corps will wear out about 120 pairs of shoes. Principal dancers are each allocate'd 12 pairs a month, while other members of the ballet are given 10. The pink satin slippers, individually made for each dancer and handfinished, cost £12.50 a pair.
