Games medals shown

PA Auckland The Commonwealth Games media office yesterday displayed the medals which will be presented to Commonwealth Games winners next year. The medals feature the traditional Games emblem on one side, with a pohutukawa blossom superimposed on the Games logo on the reverse. They were designed by sculptor Marian Fountain, who studied at the Elam School of Arts and at Scuola della Medaglia attached to the Rome Mint in Italy. The 29-year-old New Zealander said the medals paid homage to Maori art and the pohutukawa tree. The medals were struck at the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra. Both gold and silver medals are carved from sterling silver and the first place-getter’s medal is plated in 18ct gold. The New Zealand team tracksuit was also shown for the first time yesterday. The white suit has blue and green trim with a silver fern on a black background.
