New D.S.I.R. land division
By OLIVER RIDDELL in Wellington The D.S.I.R. is combining three of its divisions — botany, land and soil, and ecology — into a new Land Resources Division. But all three will remain in present locations, including the Botany Division in Christchurch. This division has pur-pose-built buildings at Lincoln and there was no money to shift them even if there were a wish to, said the director-general of the D.5.1.R., Dr Jim Ellis. But there might be more of a mixing of staff between the three old divisions than before, he said. The Minister of
Science, Mr Tapsell, said the regrouping into one division was in line with D.S.I.R. policy to form larger working units. Regrouping would have “little effect” on staffing numbers, he said. The new division had not been named yet and would start on April I next year with a combined staff of about 240. The position of director for it would be advertised internationally as well as in New Zealand. A recent regrouping within the D.S.I.R. had brought together the entomology and plant diseases divisions into the new Plant Protection Division, Dr Ellis said.
