Hogan fails to claim back drag record

PA Wellington It was not the record that New Zealand’s fastest man wanted, but Garth Hogan had to be content with resetting this country’s top fuel dragster record.

Garth Hogan wants back the title for “the quickest drag racer outside North America.”

That title now belongs to Sweden’s Monica Oberg, set

with a pass in England of 5.39 seconds at 418.50km/h (260 mph for the standingstart 400 metre sprint race. During the week-end Hastings’ CRC International Dragway once again shook as Hogan’s U.S.A.-built dragster thundered to a new speed record for this country of 406.88km/h (252.80 mph at an elapsed time of 5.724 seconds.

At the Christmas meeting last year, at the same venue, Hogan recorded a time I.6km/h faster but because his front wheels were off the ground only his on-board computer was able to record what was to become known as the unofficial record. Hogan was understandably disappointed at missing the title although the New Zealand speed record was set on

only his second drive of this 4000 horsepower missile. Heindicated that he would be returning to the meetings on December 27 and 31, at the same venue, to make further attempts. Air density problems appeared to affect engine performance in the 2000 horsepower top alcohol funny cars. Wellington’s Alan Dunlop turned over driving of the national record-holding Ford

Mustang to Rangiora's Dick Powell for this meeting. John Cole, of Auckland, won the bracket because of consistent performances. A new class created this season turned out to be the crowd pleaserof the meeting. The wild bunch cars, with production-type car bodies and 1200 horsepower engines, pulled wheel-stands and bounced from guardrail to

guardrail Wellingtonian David Green had to pull out of the meeting after major engine damage during practice. Matamata’s Chris Tynan fought the supercharged and alcohol-injected 496 cu in powered 1955 Chevy to the winner’s circle of the wild bunch with a final round pass of 8.752 seconds at 250.95km/h (155.97 mph
