Safe-cracking spree
Three safes were hit by burglars during a spate of commercial break-ins in Christchurch overnight on Monday. One was cut open at the scene and the other two carried off, netting the thieves about $5700 and a $3700 gold and diamond ring. The burglars took the first safe from SIMU Mutual Insurance, Riccarton Road. They then moved to the AA office next door, cutting open a concrete and steel safe, before leaving for the AMP Society three doors down the road. One of the safes was wheeled away on a chair. Inspector Chris Cole said the burglars would have been in the area for some time. Eight other burglaries were reported by businesses when staff arrived for work yesterday, he said.
