Vehicle winched from crevasse

An articulated tracked vehicle which fell into a crevasse on the New Glacier, Antarctica, on Sunday, has been winched out and is continuing with its programme, the D.S.I.R. announced yesterday. The vehicle was carrying a fourman scientific party on an expedition to the Mackay Glacier area, north-west of Scott Base, when it broke through a snow bridge over a

crevasse on the New Glacier, late on Sunday evening. The rear part of the two-part vehicle became wedged in the crevasse.

No-one was hurt in the incident, but, because of white-out conditions, the crew had to camp at the site, about 160 km from Scott Base, until a rescue crew could be taken in by helicopter.

Survival instructors, Mr Charlie Hobbs and Ms Maryanne Waters, of Mount Cook, and a mechanic, Mr Pedro Nelson, of Whangarei, arrived at the scene about 2 p.m. on Monday with extra winching equipment, and managed to get the machine but of the crevasse about midnight. Mr Nelson reported that the machine was undamaged.
