Job survey ‘a static picture’

The Minister of Employment, Mrs King, described yesterday’s Household Labour Force Survey figures as presenting a “fairly static picture.” It showed what previous survey and the Labour Department’s figures had shown, “That there is a slowing in the rate of unemployment — a levelling out and there has been since January.” “It's still too high and it’s not good enough but that’s what the figures are showing us.” Mrs King said that the loss of employment in the provinces should be compared with the much higher rate of job loss there a year ago. “In relative terms we have seen a slowing and a slowing is better than the rapid and dramatic rise we saw in the last year and the year before that.” But the Opposition spokesman on employment, Mr John Banks, said the survey confirmed that unemployment was at alarming levels. ,
