City at night
Sir,—Yesterday evening, on returning home from a night out, I was disgusted to see Hereford Street cluttered with prostitutes and transvestites. It was quite obvious they were soliciting (one was in her bathing costume). Is our police force so impotent that it cannot put a stop to this? Is this what tourists are coming here to see? Or have the morals of this city fallen so low that this is our only answer to unemployment? With summer arriving, tourists will be getting about more during the warm nights. If the police cannot control this situation, 1 will be ashamed of how our visitors will judge our city.—Yours, etc., D. MARSHALL. November 9, 1989.
[The district commander of the police in Christchurch, Chief Superintendent H. R. Melrose, replies: “The recent presence of particular people in certain parts of the city has been noted by police and appropriate action is being taken.”]
