‘Street battle’ killing
PA Wellington The Hamilton police are investigating the fatal stabbing of a man in a Hamilton street early on Saturday. Detective Inspector Lex Denby said yesterday that the police believed Tony Thomas, aged 19, had been stabbed about 12.30 a.m.
The police had interviewed two youths who had been injured in what neighbours described as a “running battle” in O’Neill Street.
The two injured youths had been treated at Waikato Hospital and discharged, Mr Denby said in a statement. Mr Thomas had been with the two at the time of the street fight. The police cordoned and searched an extensive area of O’Neill Street on Saturday and the search continued yesterday in a smaller area near-where the body was found.
Several blood samples from the area had been found and preserved, Mr Denby said. Today the police would continue interviews with residents and people known to have attended a party in the street on Friday night which Mr Thomas is believed to have attended.
