Southland meeting at Riverton today

Southland correspondent The remaining nine races at the Southland Racing Club’s abandoned meeting at Ascot Park on Saturday will be completed as scheduled at the Riverton course this afternoon. _ The club was forced to abandon the first day of the meeting after rain on a hard track made the racing surface ’ .unsafe before the. running, of? the second r event. ' ’ ■ The club was similarly plagued at its - November 2 fixture on the course. A new date is being sought; for that meeting. The Southland club will also hold the second day of its summer meeting at the Riverton course on Friday. . the Ascot Park track is considered too much of a day-to-day proposition in its ' present state to risk racing there on Friday, with further likely disruptions. Before the second race on Saturday, jockeys asked for the chance to inspect the track after light rain had fallen on it. An inspection was carried out by the committee, stipendiary stewards, jockeys 'and trainers. After the inspection, the committee heard more submissions from those parties and, after taking all matters into account, including the weather forecast, which was for more showers, the committee determined that the: track was unsafe for further, racing. There was no alternative but to abandon the rest of the day’s programme. . Neil Ridley, the Southland delegate to the New Zealand Jockeys’ Association, said the great majority of riders were not prepared to ride on the track, as they considered it unsafe; The track, he said, was safe when he worked one of six horses in a trial on it earlier in the week, but rain on race morning quickly transformed it to an unsafe state. “The clover and clay contents are seen by most as the main problems,” Ridley said. “Racing in Southland is facing problems and the confidence of many is being knocked again.” A track which could take a shower on raceday, and still be safe, should be the

aim of all, he said.
