Thief ruins holiday plans

A car thief has ruined a two-month wilderness trip planned by three University of Canterbury students. Steve Garside, Jon Hunt and Darryl Moore lost three kayaks and most of their camping gear when a car loaded up with the equipment was stolen from outside a central-city address this week. The Toyota Corolla was found the following day — minus the equipment “We’ve been studying for exams all year and we thought we’d take the trip after them. We’d been planning it for the past six months,” said Mr
Garside, aged 20, yesterday. The stolen equipment is worth about $5OOO. Not all of it was insured. The three were to leave on Thursday to mountain-bike and kayak in the Hurunui River area. Messrs Hunt and Garside were then to continue through the South and North Islands. “I’m not sure what we’re going to do now. I may be heading to Nelson to get a job to get some money to buy another kayak,” said Mr Garside. The stolen gear included lifejackets, helmets, paddles, clothing, wetsuits, a tent and sleeping bags.
