Preparations are continuing for the South Island’s first Pacific Island arts festival to be held at Christchurch’s Cowles Stadium on Saturday, November 25. A powhiri (welcome) by the Ngai Tahu people will begin the Niu Sea Land Arts Festival which joins the Samoan, Fijian, Cook Island, Tongan, Niuean, and Tokelauan communities in a celebration of song and dance. The event’s convener, Mr Vic Tamati, said the festival would be the biggest annual event this year for the Pacific Island community.
The Maori and South Pacific Arts Council was funding the event which involved 240 Pacific Island performers, and some guest artists.
“The bond between the Pacific Island communities has always been strong but an event like this will help strengthen that.
“It also provides a chance for other members of the Christchurch community to see such different cultures in action,” Mr Tamati said. For Christchurch-born Pacific Islanders it presented a public stage for cultures that they could identify with and be proud of, he said.
Food stalls and arts and crafts displays would be heldJ tCdwles Stadium had seating for 1100 people but, numbers might exceed that, Mr Tamati said. f
The event will run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and entry will be $2 for adults with children free:
