Dog has her day —in court

NZPA-Reuter Los Angeles A two-year-old dog named Cuddles has had her day in court — to prove she has more bark than bite. Cuddles, a brown and white springer spaniel, appeared for the prosecution in the trial of a California sheep rancher accused of killing her litter-mate when both dogs strayed on to his property. While, members of the jury craned their necks, a courtappointed animal expert, draped in a white sheet and wearing a straw hat, crawled towards Cuddles. Cuddles cowered behind her owner, Ms Lorraine Owens. The prosecutors said the demonstration was intended to show the jury that Cuddles and her dead litter-mate, Freckles, would never have attacked the rancher’s sheep.

Ernest Reubens, aged 59, is accused of killing Freckles and has pleaded not guilty to charges of cruelty to animals and of using a gun with gross negligence.
