Schofield tops in Britain

BY

DAVID JONES

NZPA London Former New Zealand children’s television presenter Phillip Schofield is the number one favourite with Britain’s young people. They have voted the 27-year-old the outstanding personality and the most popular television personality of 1989. The, poll, involving nearly 20,000 young people, was carried out by two youth magazines published by Barclays Bank. Phillip Schofield emigrated to New Zealand with his parents when he was a child and became one of the country’s leading children’s television presenters before returning to Britain. He currently fronts one of the 8.8.C.’s top children’s shows. He said he was delighted to win the award. “I’ve been very lucky. I never imagined when I started out that things would look so rosy,” he told the “Daily Mirror.” “So I’m very very grateful to all my fans.” He also revealed that he took all the work that was offered to him because he was “terrified that one day I will wake up and find out that the bubble has burst and the telephone isn’t ringing any more.” Schofield’s girlfriend, New Zealand ballet dancer and fellow television presenter Fenella Bathfield, visited him in England last month.

Other awards presented yesterday included Eddie Murphy best actor, Kylie Monogue pop personality, sprinter Linford Christie sports personality, Princess Diana most popular style leader, and newspaper proprietor Robert Maxwell most popular businessman.

The Australian soap opera, “Neighbours,” was voted most popular television programme for the second year running.
