Defence backing for gay ban

NZPA-AP New York The United States Defence Department has rejected a draft report by a military research centre that concludes that the armed forces should reconsider their policy of barring gays from the service, the “New York Times” reported yesterday. A senior official said in an

internal memo that the report was flawed, offensive and wasteful of government resources, the newspaper said. The internal correspondence that cirticised the document said the report went far beyond its job of determining security risks posed by gays in the military while it examined the general

question of whether they were suited for the military. The Defence Department has said thaty people who engage in homosexual behaviour undermine “discipline, good order and morale” in the armed forces. In 1982, that policy was expanded to include men and women who have a “propensity” to homosexual behaviour.
