Week-end of serious socialising

By

PATRICK McLENNAN

More than 700 delegates from 72 branches of the Round Table Association gathered in Christ-, church at the week-end to do some serious socialising. The Round Table convention is an annual event for the service club, whose aims are to develop fellowship and responsible citizenship, according to the chairman of the week-end’s organising committee, Mr Michael O’Regan. The object of the week-end was fellowship, he said. The convention opened with a music hall evening on Friday, followed by what was claimed to be the largest fancy dress ball in New Zealand on Saturday evening, and finally a banquet and ball on Sunday. Mr O’Regan said about 500 people attending the convention travelled on a train excursion to Arthur’s Pass on Sunday.

The only gravity of the weekend was provided by the association’s annual meeting on Saturday, during which Mr Peter Richardson, of Upper Hutt, was elected national president.

The outgoing president, Mr Bruce Laird, received an international award as the most outstanding national president from a group comprised of Round Table and associated organisations.
