Lord Hybrow for Flemington
NZPA-AAP Sydney The veteran stayer, Lord Hybrow, has been confirmed as a Melbourne Cup starter after pulling up well after his impressive performance in Saturday’s Tattersails Cup (2400 m at Randwick. Lord Hybrow, fully qualified in eighteenth position on the cup order of entry, only had to run well to earn the trip south and his third placing
cemented his position. “The horse has pulled up very well, which he always does, so we’re off to Melbourne with him for the cup,” trainer Neville Mcßurney said. . “His form warrants the trip as he’s been running some top races with big weights and is as good as he’s ever been.” The eight-year-old lugged 57.5 kg at Randwick and put in the
run of the race as he was near last until the final 350 m when he charged home. Lord Hybrow drops to 54.5 kg in the Melbourne Cup (3200 m on November 7, and Mcßurney believes that gives the stayer a strong chance. “The horse is not a good weight carrier so the drop to 54.5 kg will be a big help and gives him a chance,” said Mcßurney.
The veteran is a proven 3200 m performer, having won twice over the distance — the 1988 Brisbane Cup with 54.5 kg and a Rosehill Stayers Cup in May, 1987. He ran second to Coshking in this year’s Brisbane Cup and has had two previous Melbourne Cup starts for a twelfth to Kensei in 1987 and a twentieth to Empire Rose last year.
